Ingredients:
- 1 cup red lentils
- 3 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp ginger, grated
- 2 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
- Salt and pepper
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Rinse the lentils in a fine mesh strainer until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, bring the water to a boil. Add the lentils, onion, garlic, and ginger.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the cumin, turmeric, coriander, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and diced tomatoes.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are tender and the dhal has thickened.
- Serve the dhal hot, garnished with fresh cilantro and yogurt (if desired). Enjoy!
